*An ArtFRONT Sponsored Event*

While all the recent successes in the Chattanooga local music scene are underway in which long time players finally get their due recognition in events like the widely popular Road to Nightfall shows and local opening spots for many major touring artists at venues like track 29 & Rhythm & Brews there is a whole new wave of artists honing their skills for their launch into the sea of music that is originating right here in the scenic city. In collaboration with ArtFRONT Presentations locally rooted theater “chanteuse?” Jessie Knowles will be presenting a new group of artists in the pristine sound quality of the Barking Legs theater. In a stripped down Grand ol’ opry style hosting gig Jessie will be emceeing this first round of artists including The Tab Spencer group, Wyoming translpant to Chattanooga Angela Rose and featuring Jessie Knowles as the Porter Wagoner figure introducing the new acts and interspersing the show with songs of her own. This is the premier event for the people who are REALLY paying attention to the new music up and coming out of Chattanooga. Save the jubilation and loud partying til later, come chill, have a beer and a hoot or two while taking in the most interesting new music in town. <>

Download for hi-res version

“Tab Spencer was the stage name of a Country songwriter in the 70s from Nashville TN, and is survived by his son, Garrett Bourdon.  The current group and upcoming EP release is a result of musicians from Chattanooga coming together around Garrett’s folk vision. Jack Kirton also serves as backing instrumentalist on guitar and pe dal steel.  Tab Spencer’s music is a combination of traditional country-bluegrass slowed down with lyrics set in a thoroughly modern setting. Bourdon’s voice is both simple and haunting. Tab Spencer is a Tennessee son with an urban memory whose lyrics hail from the South and the back porch.”

Angela Rose hails from Laramie, Wyoming but recently relocated to Chattanooga in search of warmer climes and a change of scenery. Although she learned some chords and how to strum a guitar when she was 13, her start in music really began in 2011 when she and some buddies started their band Trash Canyon and the Honey Bees.  They had a wild, whiskey-infused year in Laramie, playing a mixture of old-timey, country, and gypsy folk music. Trash Canyon split up in the summer of 2012 as it’s members moved onto bigger and better pursuits. Angela then started to focus more on writing her own songs. Her music is generally simple, three-chord songs with unapologetic lyrics about drinking, sleeping around, and traveling.  Her influences range from classics like Hank Williams Sr., Townes Van Zandt, Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, Hazel and Alice to contemporary musicians like Hurray for the Riff Raff, Lydia Loveless, Those Darlins, Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch.

April 26th, 2014 by Robin

William Fitzsimmons was one of the first artists that I noticed as being of the “best talent available to play here” catergory that I’ve been telling people was the criteria for the ArtFRONT Presentations artist selection from the beginning of the series. This goes all the way back to Myspace days and he has always been on my radar. Since then (2005) he has released seven albums but up until now the availability to have him onstage has eluded us here in Chattanooga, that’s why I immediately accepted an offer from Windish Agency (who also sent us Kaki King) when Chattanooga was offered a spot on William’s tour which quite impressively comprises one of the most extensive national & international concert tours happening.
At that moment I wasn’t aware of an incredible bonus attached to this deal, the inclusion of Ben Solee on this bill. Back to William Fitzsimmons. Another of the more high profile artists in his style category “Iron & Wine” has received a lot of airplay and press locally and it seemed to me that William Fitzsimmons was always simmering in the background somewhere just waiting to wash into the conciousness of the lovers of truly melodic folk artists and there seem to be a lot of those fans around. This time around He will bring his band to fill up Barking Legs Theater with the kind of Blissful sound quality the venue is so well suited for.
Here’s a page full of info and a studio recordings to give an idea what a treat we are in for on Saturday April 26th. ~R.

Plenty of national publications have noticed Mr. Fitzsimmons and here are a few of their accolades and showcased tunes and videos:

Ben Solee from www.BenSollee.com/bio/
Known for his thrilling cello-playing that incorporates new techniques to create a unique mix of folk, bluegrass, jazz and R&B, Sollee possesses rough-smooth-smoky vocal stylings bordering on hip-hop and a knack for intricate arrangements that has brought about comparisons to Sufjan Stevens. Sollee shares himself completely with his audience, whether it be by personal lyrics, or his commitment to the environment. Sollee can often be found riding a bicycle to his concerts (cello strapped to the back), which have become legendary for their intimacy.

His latest album, produced by Sollee himself, boasts a sublime cast of musicians, including Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket) on electric/acoustic guitar and pedal steel, Alana Rocklin on bass, Jordon Ellis on percussion, Jeremy Kittel (formerly of the Turtle Island String Quartet) on violin, and guest vocals by Abigail Washburn. Sollee contributes octave mandolin, guitar, and of course, his signature cello.

The Goodbye Girls

Jim Avett

Barking Legs Theater 1307 Dodds Ave. Chattanooga, TN
Show starts 8pm. Friday Dec. 27th.

All ages welcome

Traditional country musician Jim Avett of Concord NC put his family first and spent 35 years building bridges in order to provide for them. This paid off in many ways not the least of which is the influence he had on his two sons Scott & Seth, The Avett Brothers. As a reward for a life well lived, in his retirement Jim has focused on his early love of playing guitar, singing and writing songs, an unbroken thread throughout his life. Jim Avett’s first paying gig was playing Beethoven & Bach on violin on a live radio show. The son of a Methodist minister and a classical pianist, Jim grew up in a home full of love and music. Jim’s guitar was ever present and there was always singing.
After retiring in 2008 he recorded “Jim Avett and Family,” a collection of gospel music, with his children, Bonnie, Scott and Seth. Soon after, in 2010, he released “Tribes,” a collection of original tunes ranging from soulful ballads to the lighthearted, “Fight with a Bottle of Booze”. In Jim’s latest offering, “Second Chance,” the influences of classic country and early rock and roll are apparent.

You can find Jim performing in listening rooms and at festivals (such as Merlefest) from the Southeast to New England. His shows are a combination of beloved country tunes and his original ballads with the stories he tells to introduce them.

One comes away from a Jim Avett performance with the feeling that this is an honest man sharing his life and his love of music. It’s like spending the evening on the front porch singing and talking with a good friend.

Making her second appearance at Barking Legs, this time with her full band, Mandi Rae from Birmingham is one of the performers who is posed to take back country music from the over commercialized grip of the Nashville establishment and give us a genuine taste of the sincere, straightforward narrative and powerful voices of the real south. Always known for being full of humor and straight to the point, Mandi Rae has a natural affinity for entertaining and offers a refreshing break from any of the standard expectations in today’s Americana or Country styles. More in line with Jonathan Richman lyrically and Loretta Lynn in presentation, Mandi Rae’s good humor and lively stage presence has been tempered of a late by the tragic loss of her husband, leaving her with two little girls to raise along with a blossoming music career. The intensity evident in Mandi Rae’s Music city Roots performance shortly after her husband Pasco’s death shows an incredible determination to persevere and utilise her gifts in spite of the tremendous blow to her life. Her natural combination of wit, humor and natural storytelling ability built into her songwriting has been there since her earliest appearances. The unexpectd tragic circumstance is creating, within a very real human scenario, one of the most intense crucibles of creativity for southern music we have seen so far this decade. I for one am going to be watching Mandi Rae very closely. All her rustic edges are the real thing.

The Goodbye Girls are Chattanooga duo Hayley Graham and Amber Fults. When these two powerful voices combined for their debut at last month’s “After Thanksgiving Music Extravaganza” with artists selected by Ryan Oyer this duo was one of the knockout performances of the evening. With surprising harmonies and vocal structure that excels far beyond any straight up singing duo they have the natural potential to be the most interesting teamup to come out of Chattanooga’s current whirlwind of musical activity. You probably have seen Amber & Hayley separately in one of their many performances around town in collaborations with the city’s most active musicians and groups. Amber’s full band, The Ambivalent Lovers, won the headlining spot for the Road to Nightfall competition in 2013 And Hayley has added the kind of vocal backing to various local bands that make them sound like top notch professionals. These two are natural talents who display very little reservation in letting loose with the goods which they are gifted. A dynamic evening of entertainment is expected from all these musicians at Barking Legs on December 27th.
